A Surprising Fact

  • The Village Cage: Lingfield is home to a stone “cage” or village gaol, built in 1773, which was used to lock up drunkards and petty criminals, with its last recorded use in 1882.
  • Royal Connection: The Lingfield Park Racecourse was opened in 1890 by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), who granted the course permission to use the Prince of Wales feathers in its official branding, which remains today.
  • Holocaust Refugee Home: A stately home in the village, Weir Courtney (now known as a “Lingfield House”), was used in 1945 to house child survivors of Nazi concentration camps.
